Stand with the people of Sudan
We stand in solidarity with our people in Sudan who are in the midst of violent repression at the hands of a military force. We also condemn the foreign governments who have contributed to the violence and the corporations who benefit. We see this attack as an assault on us all and demand an immediate end to the targeting and killing of those who are choosing to resist in Khartoum and across Sudan.
Since June 3rd of this year, at least 120 protesters were killed and hundreds have either been assaulted or severely injured in a brutal attack carried out by pro-government militias in Khartoum. This week, 11 protesters participating in a nation-wide strike were killed and dozens injured in Deleij, central Darfur, as their market stalls and homes were burned to the ground.
Both spontaneous protests and organized resistance movements led to the ousting of former president, Al-Bashir after three decades in power. The people of Sudan took lessons from their own rich history of popular uprisings against military dictatorships. They know that military rule is no solution and have demanded a civilian-led government through acts of civil disobedience.
As the spirit of resistance and the demands for a just government grew in volume and strength, the interim Transitional Military Council (TMC) led by members of the former regime began a ruthless crackdown. These attacks included deportations, arrests, rapes, and the murder of unarmed protesters across the country. This outrage cannot go unopposed. We call on people around the world to demand justice and accountability in Sudan. This support must first and foremost recognize the self-determination of the Sudanese people. We know that outside military interventions, especially U.S. led efforts, have only exacerbated civil conflicts in the region.
The Movement for Black Lives and Africans Rising join those across Africa, Latin America, the Carribean, Europe and around the world in expressing outrage at the violent crackdown on protesters in Sudan.
We join those on the ground in Sudan in calling for an immediate end to the killings, violent attacks, and repression of protesters as well as an end to military rule. Additionally, we are united in supporting demands made by the Sudanese people which include the following:
- An independent international inquiry into the killing of more than 100 peaceful protesters by forces led by the Transitional Military Council (TMC)
- Recognition of the Forces for the Declaration of Freedom and Change (FDFC) as the legitimate representative of the Sudanese people and Condemnation of interference by the governments of US allies — the Saudi Kingdom, the UAE and Egypt — in support of the TMC
- An immediate end to the internet black-out, an attempt by Sudanese authorities to limit not only communication, but information shared across and outside Sudan.
- For the International community and the African Union to recognize and hold the Egyptian Government accountable for its role in the violent repression in Sudan. The world cannot ignore the fact that the current Chairperson of the African Union, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt continues to play a role in aiding the Transitional Military Council.
- The liberation of all political prisoners
We see this as a moment that people around the globe can stand together to support the inspiring change that the Sudanese people have fought for and the people of Sudan rightfully deserve. We stand on the side of those fighting for the freedom of the masses of Black and all oppressed people around the world. In a world where white supremacy still reigns, and the vestiges of colonialism are still palpable, we must support demands that call for an end to the very systems that are responsible for our suffering. It is with this understanding, that we condemn the current atrocities in Sudan and recommit ourselves to a trans-national struggle for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.
Stand with the people of Sudan. Stop the military repression.
