Over 1000 African and Diaspora CSOs and Pan-Africanists demand decisive action on Afrophobia, in urgent letter to South Africa government.

05 JUNE 2026

Africans Rising, on behalf of more than 1,000 civil society organisations and Pan-African networks from over 65 countries across Africa and the Diaspora, has formally submitted an urgent letter to the Government of South Africa demanding immediate and decisive action against the escalating wave of Afrophobic violence, intimidation, and anti-African mobilisation targeting fellow African nationals in the country.

This unprecedented continental action follows a collective sign-on letter that drew overwhelming endorsement from across the continent and beyond. The scale of support and concerns reflects a growing and urgent conviction among African citizens and organisations, the recent attacks and anti-African mobilisation constitute a direct threat to Pan-African unity, social cohesion, human dignity, and continental solidarity.

The letter calls on the South African government to:

  1. Act swiftly and decisively against all forms of Afrophobia in South Africa
  2. Protect all people residing within South Africa, regardless of nationality
  3. Condemn and counter all rhetoric and actions that fuel hatred, discrimination, and division
  4. Reaffirm South Africa’s historic commitment to Ubuntu, Pan-Africanism, human rights, and African solidarity
  5. Work with African governments, regional institutions, and civil society to develop sustainable, lawful, and humane responses to migration challenges

As part of the next phase of this mobilisation, Africans Rising will coordinate a continent-wide solidarity campaign that includes submitting memoranda to South African embassies and high commissions across Africa, engaging directly with the African Union, and reaching out to African diplomatic missions in all five regions to demand stronger continental action against Afrophobia and anti-African violence.
