MOVEMENT ASSEMBLY

About AAMA

The All-African Movements Assembly (AAMA) is the largest gathering of African Movements, Activists and human rights defenders

A people’s platform, it provides the opportunity to assess our collective mandate as Africans in our quest for unity, justice, peace, and dignity; an opportunity to reconnect, ask deep questions about the African situation, take stock and re-strategise on ways forward.

Context

Africa is experiencing a challenging global period characterised by political instability, economic pressure, the climate crisis and intensifying global power struggles. On our continent, democracy is weakening, conflicts are escalating, poverty is increasing, and those who are central to Africa’s future continue to be marginalised.

Since 2020, several military coups and authoritarian regimes, particularly in West and Central Africa, have restricted civic freedoms and undermined public confidence in state institutions. At the same time, ongoing conflicts and insecurity have made daily life unsafe for millions. The African continent is facing serious economic challenges, while others are competing for our resources and minerals. Climate change is also resulting in floods, droughts and cyclones that threaten food production and livelihoods.

In response to these realities, the All-African Movements Assembly (AAMA) offers African movements a shared, people-led platform where they can come together to confront challenges collectively, strengthen solidarity and organise across national borders to create a unified, just African future.

AAMA 2026

The purpose of the 2026 AAMA is to serve as a continental convening where African movements come together not just to organise and define but start working towards the building of the Africa we all envision: a united, just, peaceful, and dignified continent rooted in people’s power.

This will also serve as the space for participants to re-imagine and construct alternatives, positioning their works to be solution-oriented towards the challenges we are facing across the continent, also in our pursuit of shaping Africa’s future.

Previous Editions

The first edition was held in 2022 in Arusha, Tanzania. It brought together more than 600 movement representatives, activists, Pan-Africanists, human rights defenders, feminists, mainly young people, but with a good intergenerational mix. It created space for honest conversations about the realities of organising in restrictive environments and helped renew a sense of purpose and solidarity among participants.

The second edition of AAMA, held in 2024 in Accra, Ghana, built on the foundations laid in Arusha. AAMA 2024 brought together a wider range of movements and activists and created more structured spaces for peer learning, skills sharing, and collective planning. The Assembly deepened understanding of how shrinking civic space, economic injustice, climate crisis, and political repression are linked across the continent.

The two editions of AAMA have been instrumental in reinforcing and expanding civic space across Africa. Beyond defending fundamental rights, the convenings have broadened avenues for engagement, learning, and solidarity. Furthermore, both assemblies have served as launching pads for significant campaigns and initiatives. These include, but are not limited to, the Borderless Africa Campaign, the Pan-African Solidarity Action Network, the Movement Exchange Program, Feminist Task Force and Africans Rising’s 5-Year Strategic Plan.
