African Unity is more urgent now than ever. Time is not on our side

25th May 2026

Africans Rising joins millions of Africans across the continent and the diaspora to mark African Liberation Day. In 1963, when the leaders met in Addis Ababa, the clarion call was loud and clear – African must unite. That day marked both the promise of African togetherness and the tragedy of a postponed vision. Several decades later, the dream of a united Africa is yet to be realized. Instead, we have been mired deeply in neocolonialism, which continues to ensure that the resources of our land go to the benefit of others rather than us, with the participation of indigenous collaborators who will go every length to silence the people.

But not for long. The collective voice of the people is getting stronger and louder in their rejection of the fragmentation that slices our continent into weak, easily exploited states. This division is a violent policy failure. It traps our people behind artificial lines, allows border officials to harass local traders, and denies basic human dignity based on colonial paperwork.

Africans Rising is building a movement of the people for unity, justice, peace and dignity. Throughout this week, we are mobilizing 1000s of people across the continent to take action in solidarity. Over 500 actions happening simultaneously. In addition, our Borderless Africa campaign has galvanized young people and engendered real momentum in the push for free movement of persons in Africa – to make Africa a continent without visas. We are reclaiming politics for the masses – organizing directly in markets, on campuses, and across border towns to unite people from the ground up. We are actively organizing across the mainland and the diaspora for:

  • Freedom of Movement for all African citizens.
  • A Single African Passport and common citizenship.
  • A Single Currency to drive intra-African trade independent economic growth.
  • A Unified Military Command to protect continental security.
  • An Integrated Communication System to seamlessly link our nations.
  • A Single Educational Curriculum rooted in Pan-African history.
  • A Single, Powerful Voice for Africa on the global stage

Our ancestors won political freedom. Our generation must achieve the total liberation and unification that will protect that political freedom and guarantee us economic independence.

While commending all Pan-Africanists across the world working tirelessly to achieve this vision, we call on them to redouble efforts as time is no longer on our side.
