The struggle in Togo, we recognized, is a demand history has always entrusted the masses to amplify in every time and place. That democracy and the will of the people must eventually triumph and unseat the unjust powers that be.
The deafening silence of the ECOWAS Heads of State has been heavily criticised in more than one occasion. The Togolese are in a state of shock and confusion evoked by the active complicity between the Heads of State who support this regime to the detriment of the interests of the people.
“These arrests are yet another attempt to silence pro-democracy activists. As the political dialogue starts, the authorities must guarantee that activists and human rights defenders can do their work without being subjected to undue pressure or intimidation,” said François Patuel
During the current protests in Togo some 200 people have lost their lives, a large number have been forced to migrate (some estimates put this figure in the thousands) and a number of people have been detained and tortured
A pan-African delegation of activists on a fact-finding mission to Togo has found out the extent of the ongoing state clampdown on pro-democracy protests.
