Movement Building and Support Program

Africans Rising’s Movement Building and Support Program is in two folds namely building the Africans Rising movement into a more formidable one and supporting the building of grassroot  movements.

This program consists of initiatives designed to provide practical and strategic support to movements and activists working to address the continent’s challenges. Through this program, beneficiaries receive funding, training, capacity building, recognition, solidarity, digital security support, and rapid response assistanceto advance their objectives across Africa and in the diaspora.

Through these efforts, Africans Rising continues to amplify, empower, connect, and support African movements, helping them execute their missions more effectively and sustainably.

Objectives

The objectives of the Movement Building and Support Program are rooted in strengthening the growth, sustainability, and impact of movements and activists across Africa.
These objectives align with Africans Rising’s core mandate to Amplify, Empower, Connect, Support, and Build Solidarity among social movements.

Training and Capacity Building

To improve the effectiveness and impact of movements, Africans Rising organises regular training and capacity-building programs across the continent. These programs equip activists and movements with the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to advance their work. Some trainings are delivered in partnership with other organisations, expanding access to movements that are not yet members of Africans Rising.

Digital Security Training

Africans Rising, in collaboration with other organisations, organises regular digital security trainings for activists, human rights defenders, and journalists. This programme deepens participants’ understanding of tools, practices and methods needed to secure their digital communications, devices, and data.

Rapid Response Support

The Rapid Response Support initiative provides immediate assistance—both financial and solidarity—to activists and movements facing crises or emergencies. This mechanism ensures that movements can receive timely support without the delays associated with complex bureaucratic processes, enabling them to respond swiftly to urgent situations.

Movement Exchange Program

Through field learning engagements, Africans Rising observed that many movements work in isolation, missing opportunities to strengthen their collective power. The Movement Exchange Program addresses this by connecting movements across countries and sectors, enabling shared learning, collaboration, and solidarity. This initiative aligns with Africans Rising’s mandate to support, amplify, connect, and empower social movements to enhance their impact.

Engendering African Social Movements

This collaborative project brings together Africans Rising members and broader African movements to advocate for gender equality through knowledge production, capacity building, and advocacy initiatives.
Grounded in feminist principles, the project aims to ensure that no one is left behind and promotes a unified stance on feminism within African social movements. A call for Expressions of Interest invites African social movements to join the Feminist Task Force, which supports and amplifies the impact of the project.

Awards and Celebration

To honour and uplift outstanding activism across the continent, Africans Rising has established two major recognition initiatives:

Africans Rising Activism Awards

These awards celebrate activists and movements engaging in non-violent actions to promote unity, justice, peace, and dignity for all Africans.
Annually, Africans Rising presents three awards to nine activists and movements across the continent:
