We are determined to foster an Africa-wide solidarity and unity of purpose of the People of Africa to build the Future we want a right to peace, social inclusion, and shared prosperity. Our vision, outlined in the Kilimanjaro Declaration, is a decentralised, citizen-owned future that will build support and solidarity for local struggles, local leadership and immerse activists in the grassroots work of building social movements from below and beyond country borders. Job Title: Movement Coordinator of Africans Rising
Reporting to: The Coordinating Collective ( CC), which is the Governing Board of Africans Rising
Supervising: Staff, Consultants, Interns, program volunteers, as well as the units leads namely, Communications, Resource Mobilisation, Finance Operations, HR and Administration departments.
Location: Africans Rising offices in Dakar, Senegal/ Banjul, The Gambia or Virtually

Contract Type: A Renewable Three-year Contract based on satisfactory performance
Remuneration: Monthly salary: $4,000 – $5,000 USD per month plus competitive benefits

Terms of Reference (TOR)
- Lead Africans Rising in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by both the founding documents (Kilimanjaro Declaration 2.0), constitution and coordinating collective (Board).
- Communicate effectively with the Board and provide timely and accurate information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
- Supervise the development of financial and non-financial resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organisation.
- Ensure the fiscal integrity of Africans Rising, to include the submission of proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements to the Board, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organisation.
- Lead fundraising and development of strategic resources necessary to support Africans Rising’s mission and goals.
- Enhance the promotion of Africans Rising’s image and influence by showing active and visible leadership in the movement’s stakeholder communities by working closely with activists, human rights defenders, national movements as well as professional, civic and private organisations.
- Establish and maintain relationships with various organisations throughout the continent and Diaspora and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance Africans Rising’s Mission and goals.
- Ensure effective administration of Africans Rising operational, financial management and accountability systems to support the work of members and supporters.
- Supervise the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff, consultants and volunteers.
- Establish employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the movement.
- Oversee planning, budgeting and operations of annual plans and budgets
- Serve as Africans Rising’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public.
- Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations throughout the state and utilize those relationships to strategically enhance Africans Rising’s Mission and goals.
- Lead and supervise the work of the organization staff
- Other duties as assigned by the Coordinating Collective.
Qualifications & Attributes
You should have a primary qualification in social science, political science, international relations, journalism, or any other relevant field. While the usual tertiary qualifications and some demonstrable track record within the broad definition of civil society is desirable, the key attributes for the role include:
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively, flexibly and effectively in a small dynamic team as well as in a large diverse group
- A track record and professional experience working in the human rights arena at any level
- Excellent oral and written communication in English and at least one other widely used language on the continent such as Arabic, French, Kiswahili or Portuguese will be an advantage.
- You must possess brilliant public speaking skills and be active on social media
- Experience working in social movements in Africa
- experience in leadership, social justice, non-profit management, international development, community development, or a related social science field
- Strong interpersonal skills including proven ability to provide responsible leadership to a team and work in a cohesive team environment
- Demonstrate ability, interest and experience in resource mobilisation and other fundraising models from institutions and individuals and donor management in the social movement ecosystem
- Display strong project management experience including the ability to develop, monitor and evaluate a project plan with multiple deliverables and deadlines. Ability to plan, organise and lead the implementation of plans and processes
- Exhibit capacity to think strategically with strong skills in critical thinking and complex problem solving; displays good judgement; flexible and open to new ideas and ways of working
- Show commitment to equality and non-discrimination, public speaking, and group facilitation skills
- Demonstrate capacity to exercise ethical decision making and 21st Century soft skills including crises management, emotional intelligence, and team building
- Show knowledge of work with traditional media, new media, and other electronic communication channels to facilitate network building, information-sharing, and outreach
- Ability to work independently and remotely

The ability to use PowerPoint, set-up calls on Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other conferencing tools as well as manage other communication mediums

The ability to travel (up to 30% of time), sometimes at short notice
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (particularly proposal writing and delivering presentations/ workshops)
